Dermabrasion was a very popular procedure in the past. Before the introduction of lasers, it was the most effective method to peel off the old skin and have new, smooth, and beautiful skin. The answer is – maybe. Dermabrasion is considered an invasive skin care procedure to treat scars, uneven skin tone, birthmarks, tattoos, sun damage, age spots, and wrinkles. It uses a wire brush, diamond wheel, sterilized sandpaper, or other mechanical means for deeper abrasion (peel off) of upper to mid layers of the skin. Microdermabrasion is non-invasive skin care procedure and can be performed by moderately trained persons at salons and beauty parlors. Now, even home microdermabrasion kits are available, and people can have glowing skin at home.

Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser skin resurfacing is an even better alternative of dermabrasion. A laser beam is targeted in the required area which peels off the outer layer of the skin by vaporization instead of mechanical means. The new lasers give a great deal of control to the dermatologist or laser operator and they can adjust the settings according to the area being treated and the condition of the skin.

Although the laser can harm the skin if used inappropriately by untrained people, the risk is considerably low. And lasers have a unique advantage over its alternatives – the ability to stimulate collagen. The collagen is a skin fiber responsible for producing new skin and maintaining its elasticity. When lasers combine skin peeling with collagen stimulation, it produces remarkable effects by making the skin considerably smooth and youthful.
